First of all, beware of the fact that the film uses three languages, English, Italian and French. The French is hard to follow but yet from what I can hear it is some French. The Italian is for me an opera language and the Italian in this film does not have that music, a lot flatter. The English is standard American English and all foreign languages, I mean non-English languages are subtitled in English, still standard American English, what they call mid-Atlantic English.
Second? this film is an adaptation of the eponymous novel but it cuts off all the last part, after the phone call on Hanukkah, the phone call being identified as being on Hanukah, which is from a Jew to a Jew a very cruel present, since the phone call tells Elio that the unforgettable affair he had with Oliver is not only finished but it has no hope for no future since Oliver is getting married. The point is not even that they were lovers, even friends should not behave like that. Friendship should have no end, but too often it does. And when the two friends are lovers, gay lovers mind you, that makes things a little bit tricky, but there are some more decent ways. In this case, Oliver is gross and cruel, crudel" as they say in so many Italian operas.
Third, the cutting off of the last part of the novel gives no future to Elio and we cannot know anything and of course, it makes the story a soap opera more than a real-life adventure. The last part showed that this affair had irreversible consequences for Elio. In the film, we assume it will. But the novel also made Elio meet Oliver again many years later in the USA on Oliver's campus. And that profound ending that demonstrates how impossible it is to forget what happens to you at 17 and for a young adult what happens to you with a 17-year old boy, who should have known better: just the evasive eyes of Oliver when the train is leaving. He had already closed the chapter. Not so easy in the novel. There might be some hope after all.
But fifth, we miss the main conclusion of Elio's at the end of the novel:
"You are the only person I'd like to say goodbye to when I die because only then will this thing I call my life make any sense. And if I should hear that you died, my life as I know it, the me who is speaking with you now, will cease to exist. Sometimes I have this awful picture of waking up in our house in B. and, looking out to the sea, hearing the news from the waves themselves, He died last night. We missed out on so much. It was a coma. Tomorrow I go back to my coma, and you to yours. Pardon, I didn't mean to offend - I am sure yours is no coma."
I said hope, yes but for Elio, because Oliver's response is ethically and empathetically disquieting:
"No, a parallel life."
The film then is beautiful all along, though slightly more discreet about the real sex and going on the bike on the following morning but it remains very sentimental and superficial. Such a friendship, especially if love is added, between a younger man and a slightly (or much) older man raises many questions about the effects on both men and what such a friendship or an affair can enable both men to do that they couldn't have done before, but also what it can block that could have been brought to life. And I am not only speaking of girls and women, marriage or not marriage.
I like the film but I am frustrated and I find it too emotional for a soft-hearted audience.
Dr. Jacques COULARDEAU.
The parents were fake happy for Oliver. Such a very powerful segment that melts my heart anew with each viewing. Elio's coquettish wiggle after. you saying what I think you're saying? is so redolent of teenage behaviour too! Perfection! Such a transformative experience watching this work played out with such enormous delicacy and love of their characters. The chemistry between Armie and Tim burns through the screen. Great atmosphere and fantastically well shot this film is visually beautiful. The story of a blossoming summer romance is neatly told over the rather long run time but on the whole it's fairly interesting. Downsides however have a lot to do with the performances with Chalamet at times channelling Labeouf and Hammers character being uninteresting, there's also a pacing issue with large sections being void of interest. On the whole an enjoyable watch.
The flies were the last thing on my mind watching this movie weeks after this review was posted- until the final shot. The next time someboy tells me life is done after you're 60, i'll show this video, age is not an excuse, you can be almost 90 and win a freaking Oscar. Bravo legend Ivory. Timmy's italian was flawless when he said andiamo l'americano.
Those Kisses in the neck tho. Excellent! Timothy Chalamet is so perfect in his acting like an awkward teen. Breathtaking face and body language. Just like the old stars like Greta Garbo in silent movies that acted with their eyes and faces. This kid is amazing. I saw him in the lobby of the hotel I work for before he was nominated, before he became really known. He's very playful and real. I just realised in the sequel book find me (spoilers alert) that Oliver is married to a woman and had children and also Elio had a boyfriend but they still found there way back to each other, it sounds kinda like real life. He pulled out that paper ready for the speech cuz he KNEW IT WAS GONNA WIN! BEAUTIFUL MOVIE.
“after dinner we would go back to his place or go back to my place and rehearse” 😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏. Good movie! Although a little confusing at the beginning, overall very good.
These two are. Living for the two guys in the back at 5:55 lookin like 'yeah alright we get the joke, cause gay, but no really you aint fooling us' like they are all of the shippers hahah omg. (yes I am still here rewatching these videos, yes I have an obsession with this movie yes its getting ridiculous I can't help it. George is my favorite character. The way that this film was shot and laid out, I'm speechless. It was beautiful and and thought provoking. I could watch it a dozen more times.
Elio Elio Elio Elio. I remember it all. The scene with the father is one of the best written scenes ever. Black Panther and Harley Quinn presents James Ivory award. That look at 10:40 Armie gave Timmy, just. oh my God. you see, and then Timmy starts talking. They are not telling something us, they are just having conversation between them. Agree. This film was amazing. His sentence because I wanted you to know comes back into my head again and again during my days. YOO timothée his voice is SEXY AF bye. Now that I know Oliver was upstairs alone in a room whilst they were all downstairs shooting it just makes even more sad... I can't.
3:25 Tim is so adorable 😍 I'm dying 🔥❤️😍. And he wears that shirt at the train station when theyre saying goodbye! i dont notice until i watched it a second time. Really in love with the soundtrack of this movie. the ravel in the background just makes this even more enchanting. Armie seemed so disappointed when it wasn't fan art of him and Timmy 👀.
I just love how he doesnt really look anyone in the eye🥺 hes always looking down🥺🤍
Why I keep watching this over and over and over again. They're both so beautiful. Do a more perfect couuple exist. armie n tim are so in sync. There's an adorable awkwardness/tension between the two of them. I believe there might be a little bit of feelings that developed while they were filming, I mean I think its just impossible not to feel something about someone when theres always constant physical intimate contact (e.g. kissing) like even just lil bit ya know. Only moment I cried at this years ceremony.
No comparison to 'moonlight. I didn't even think the characters were even necessarily gay, that's what's magic for me, it's a film we can all relate to and so incredibly beautiful. Every scene is a still to savour.
